Commodore's
Corner - May 2009
Great turnout at the last club meeting, lousy configuration
of the tables, and welcome to a new member whose name is Merrilee.
If you weren’t there, keep your eyes open to the web site
to see which committee or event you have been assigned to. Lessons
are around the corner, so please check out the website to figure
out when YOU can help out at the beach.
Many people at the meeting may not have realized this since the
club DOES NOT participate in sunshine laws. Since we are out in
the sun so much, more exposure for meetings would not be good.
Anyway, what happened was that a coup took place. A bloody coup
(paper cut), and I am now the COMMODORE for life. My first act
as your benevolent, yet self serving, despot is to even the playing
field. Up to this point, we have members that are buying cool
new gear and, frankly, have trailers holding WAY too much stuff.
Then we have folks like me that have the bare necessities to get
on the water. Time to (remove the children from the room now)
SOCIALIZE all equipment in the club. So thanks for getting new
gear, Jerry, I look forward to sharing it with you!!! As you know,
I’m kidding, because it just wouldn’t work. Everyone
in the club is so friendly and willing to help, loan, etc. each
other that no one would notice a difference. Why, the club is
almost, dare I say it, like a COMMUNE. What with sharing, helping
each other out and drum circles breaking out every now and again.
Guess that’s why we drink beer. No one trusts the kool-aid.
Great fun at the Stephen C. Smith; the weather was spectacular,
the beer delicious, and the food wonderful and plentiful. A nice
variety of beer at different times, my new favorite being Slim
Chance. Tasted very good for a light beer, having an actual beer
flavor.
I love the windsurfing trophies. We hand them out like super
citizen bumper stickers at an elementary school. The trophy this
year was very nice, with a nicely framed picture of what was on
the back of the shirt and your finishing place printed on it.
I received second in the Sports Fleet category of people who are,
in the words of Ian Anderson, “Too Old to Rock ‘n
Roll but too Young to Die”. Great job by Tina and Wright
in distributing them.

Lessons are right around the corner, beginning this month. This
year we will be giving lessons twice a month, on the second (2nd)
and fourth (4th) Saturday (with a few exceptions) of the month
from 11am to 3pm. What we need is YOU!!!!
We need instructors and assistants. Even though they are on the
2nd and 4th Saturday, these are the dates for those without calendars:
May 23, June 6 (a week early week due to NIMBY), June 27, July
11, July 25, August 8, August 22, and September 12. Mark you calendar
NOW on the day you can assist.
Thanks to all for helping.

Beach Cleanup Day !!!
April 19 saw lots of wind on the day we came to the beach to
construct more drying racks. I got there a little after 3 and
many of the sailors were just coming off the water after sailing
since 11am, exhausted. However, many of those sailing stayed around
to help with the beach fixup.
Once again the carpentry skills of SPSC members and their tools
were evident. If you haven’t seen the new drying racks yet,
check them out. I used them after sailing at the Stephen C. Smith
and getting my sail upright and secured was never easier. There
was LOTS of room for many sails. Holes were drilled in the bottom
of all the rails so mast foots (feet?) would snuggle nicely. The
rails that were up and nailed together were disassembled and screwed
together after foot holes were drilled in them.
Thanks to all who came to the beach for the purpose of getting
this work done and to all who came in from sailing to work. Helping
get the work done was the wonderful Bacardi Limon provided by
the Perv mixed with the Mexican beer.
